A PUPIL was left traumatised after stumbling upon a body as they went to retrieve their ball during a lunch-time kickabout.
The student was playing near a wooded area of the Liberton High School, Edinburgh, when they found the body around 1.30pm.
Onlookers said teachers ran to the scene with first aid kits while pupils watched on in horror but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are now trying to find the cause of the "unexplained" death while education chiefs stressed there was no known link to the school.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "A man's body was discovered in a wooded area at Liberton High School.
"It was reported around 1.30pm on Tuesday August 30.
"The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries to establish the full circumstances are at an early stage."
Forensics teams were picture scouring the scene this afternoon.
While well-wishers left flowers at the school gates.

An Edinburgh Council spokesman said: "At lunchtime today staff were alerted to the discovery of a body in the wooded area of the school grounds.
"Emergency services were called and Police Scotland are carrying out inquiries. We are not aware that this matter relates in any way to the school."
Pupils were allowed to attend their afternoon classes as a probe into the mystery death got underway outside.
An officer stood guard at the gate as they left the building at the end of the day.
The youngsters did not need to walk past the upsetting scene, which was being examined by forensics experts.
Liberton High has previously suffered tragedy, with the death of two pupils.
Keane Walllis-Bennett, 12, was killed by a falling wall there in April 2014 and, the previous December, footie starlet Jamie Skinner, 13, collapsed and died from a suspected heart attack as he played for Tynecastle FC under-14s.
Last year a schoolboy broke his neck after being crushed by goalposts during a PE lesson.
Another student fell down a 15ft lift shaft at Liberton High School in 2011, breaking her back in three places.
