Vladimir Putin’s “army of the dead” is carrying out a “crazy” wave of attacks on the Donbas region in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. Mr Zelensky said the fiercest fighting was taking place in Bakhmut, where Ukrainian troops have resisted Russian assaults for months and Avdiivka, outside the city of Donetsk. In a late-night video address on Wednesday, he said: “This is where the craziness of the Russian command is most evident. Day after day, for months, they are driving people to their deaths there, concentrating the highest level of artillery strikes.” Russia has spent a large part of the war concentrating on “liberating” the Donbas region. Ukrainian military sources have described the poorly trained Russian units tasked with capturing the region as an “army of the dead” because they are highly unlikely to return from their fighting alive.
