SUDAN is located in sub-Saharan Africa and neighbours seven countries.
The country, which is rich in culture, people, and languages, descended into chaos in 2023 as a result of an intense power struggle.
What is happening in Sudan?
On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict broke out between the Sudanese military and the main paramilitary force in Sudan.
The fighting began due to an apparent struggle for power between the two military regimes in the country.
There have been heavy civilian casualties since the conflict began with foreign governments rushing to evacuate their citizens.
The warring generals agreed to a three-day ceasefire starting from midnight on April 24, 2023.

While emergency evacuations of foreign nationals continue, the ceasefire will be a time of negotiation in an attempt to permanently end fighting in Sudan.
Who is fighting who in Sudan?
The Sudan Armed Forces are battling the paramilitary group Rapid Support Force for control of Khartoum, and in turn, Sudan.
General Abdel Fattah Burhan is head of the Armed Forces, and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo leads the Rapid Support Force.
The fighting started two years after the two groups jointly carried out a military coup and derailed the country's transition to democracy in 2019.

The last president, Omar al-Bashir, was ousted after 30 years in post following mass protests to his rule.
As efforts to transition into a democracy became more difficult, diplomats in Khartoum believed an outbreak of violence was imminent.
Where is the conflict taking place?
Sudan shares borders with Libya, Egypt, Chad, The Central African Republic, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea.
The 2023 conflict erupted in the Sudanese capital city of Khartoum and in the Darfur region.
There have also been intense battles reported in the western region of Darfur.
Doctors Without Borders state their medics in El Fasher have been "overwhelmed" by the number of patients with serious injuries.
Both sides have claimed to control Khartoum international airport and the presidential palace.
What could happen in Sudan?
The removal of Bashir from office raised hopes that Sudan could emerge from 30 years of autocracy and internal conflict.
However, the fighting could not only destroy those hopes but destabilise a crucial region in Africa.
Sudan is the third largest country in Africa by area and the Nile River runs through the country.
Sudan shares water with regional heavyweights Ethiopia and Egypt. Egypt relies on the river to support its population of 100 million, and Ethiopia is creating an upstream dam alarming both Cairo and Khartoum.
The risk of the overspill of violence from Sudan is high should the conflict continue.
Alan Boswell of the International Crisis Group said: "Chad and South Sudan look most immediately at risk of potential spillover.
"But the longer the fighting drags on the more likely it is we see major external intervention."
