UK city that gets the more snow than anywhere else – and it’s not in Scotland
The UK’s ability to handle snow is notoriously poor; rail chaos, school closures and an inadequate number of road gritters scuppers Brits’ plans all over the country. But which corner of the UK is the snowiest?
The Met Office has issued a whopping 48-hour weather warnings for snow and ice this week, but some areas are more likely to be in for a flurry than others.
Researchers at Leonardo Hotels have crunched the numbers and found out which major UK cities average the highest number of snowy days – the results are somewhat surprising.
Despite Scotland having the reputation as the home nation with the coldest climes, it’s actually English cities that make up the top three snowiest spots.

3. Newcastle
In third place comes The Toon. Forget fog on the Tyne, it’s the snow and frost that visitors should be worried about. As one of England’s most northerly major cities, it should come as no surprise that it has made it into the top three. According to Met Office data, Geordie lads and lasses experience an average of nine snowy days a year and seven days where frost is on the ground.
Whether it’s The Angel of the North, St James’ Park or Eldon Square, Newcastle is used to good covering. So if you’re heading up there this winter, best to bring a coat (even if the locals don’t wear them).
However, it may raise a few eyebrows to read that the two cities that see more snow days a year are significantly further south.

2. Birmingham
Britain’s second city comes in second which is something of a surprise. According to the historic snow data, Brum gets the same number of flurries as Newcastle but double the number of days where frost is on the ground – 14. For that reason gritters should be out in force in the Midlands soon, to make sure pedestrians and motorists aren’t slipping and sliding about.
Although more than two hours south of Newcastle, maybe we shouldn’t be so shocked it gets such wintery weather. After all, one its three main stations is called Snow Hill, so maybe the city knows something we don’t.
1. Sheffield
Yep, that’s right, topping the list and earning the title of Britain’s snowiest city is Sheffield. We didn’t believe it either. But the numbers are in and it’s official: Yorkshire’s second biggest city gets more snow than any other in the country. Let’s break down the stats.
The Steel City gets a whopping of 11 days of snow on average every year and nine days where there’s a touch of frost. Chilly. So if you’re a snow super fan, why not pop over to Sheffield this winter? It’s your best bet for classically wintery conditions.
It’s worth noting that although Sheffield has taken title of the country’s snowiest city, it isn’t the snowiest place in the UK overall.
That honour goes to the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. It’s one of the most popular snow sports destinations in the UK, with the park receiving on average 76 days of snow each year.
The Cairngorms are followed by the Shetland Islands situated North of mainland Scotland with weather stations recording on average 64 days of snowfall.
The Scottish Island Fair Isle comes in third place with 62 snow days, with the Orkney Island just off the tip of mainland Scotland having 59 days.
