UK could see a record-breaking hot summer – with three-month heatwave expected
The UK could see a record-breaking hot summer this year, with a three-month heatwave potentially on the cards.
According to the Met Office's three-month summer outlook, the chances of "hot weather" are double those of other years.
It states: “There is an increase in the likelihood of warmer-than-average conditions in the month ahead.
“Predictions are consistent in suggesting an increase in the likelihood of temperatures being above average overall.
“While this doesn’t necessarily mean heatwaves will occur, it does increase the likelihood of heatwaves compared to normal.”
Exacta Weather’s James Madden said: “There is now the potential for a major spell of warm weather to develop during the latter part of May or early June.”
Bookies are predicting a potential record hot summer this year, with Coral slashing their odds from 3/2 to 5/4.
Spokesman John Hill said: “The betting is pointing to a record hot summer this year in the UK. After what has been an unsettled couple of weeks, it is something to look forward to.”
Similarly Ladbrokes have done the same regarding this May being the hottest ever, slashing their odds from 4/1 to 2/1.

This comes as firefighters have been put on "high alert" with wildfires threatening to wreak havoc during the bank holiday weekend.
The Wildlife Trust warned there's a serious risk wildfires could break out across the UK following a prolonged dry spell — with something as simple as a stray cigarette or BBQ having the potential to set light to beauty spots.
Wildfires have blazed in Surrey, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Dorset and Teesside over the past 10 days, killing wild animals and leaving massive swathes of land scorched.
