Whoops: Boat gets worst of it after slamming into Florida bridge | Video – The Denver Post

The Fort Lauderdale luxury charter yacht Sun Dream delivered on its promise to “sail into the extraordinary” on Saturday night when the three-tiered vessel, packed with partiers, became wedged under the Sunrise Boulevard Bridge.

While there were no apparent injuries, it’s not every day that you see a 137-foot yacht seemingly intent on jamming itself under the bridge, as seen on video captured by nearby resident Mark Addison.

Addison’s home on the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway faces the GalleryOne Doubletree Suites hotel, where the Sun Dream is docked. He said the boat overshot the spot where it ties up and continued into a small opening under the bridge between the dock and a large bridge support.

Addison said he was shocked to watch the boat lurch toward the bridge instead of backward.

“We heard some ruckus out there, and next thing I know the boat was ramming itself up underneath the bridge,” said Addison, who began taking video.

“You could hear things crunching. They had a party on board, so the whole upper deck was full of people when it started going up underneath the bridge. People were screaming,” he said.

A crew member who declined to be named placed the blame both on wind gusts and a mechanical issue (“actuator pin,” he said) that temporarily prevented the crew from putting the boat in reverse as it was docking.

The crew resolved the issue and backed the boat into position without incident, he said.

The Sun Dream, which can accommodate up to 149 passengers and boasts a 1,000-square-foot open-air observation deck, markets itself as a popular venue for corporate events, wedding receptions and holiday parties.

Late Saturday the Sun Dream sat in its usual spot with only a few scrapes visible on the hull.
