Woman stands in Kharkiv's 'field of sorrows' as war rages on
A lone mourner among the graves of Ukraine’s fallen: Remarkable picture shows woman standing in Kharkiv’s ‘field of sorrows’ as war rages on and casualties soar above 100,000
- A picture has captured a forest of Ukrainian flags in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine
- It comes as up to 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the fighting
Dressed in black and apparently alone in a forest of blue and yellow Ukrainian flags, a woman stands by the grave of a fallen soldier… perhaps her son, perhaps her husband.
The scene beneath a grey sky near Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine highlights the human cost of the country’s stubborn resistance to Vladimir Putin’s bloody invasion.
Each of the flags, so numerous they block out the horizon, marks a grave. More than 7,000 civilians have been killed since Russia launched its attack in February last year, while nearly 12,000 more have been injured in the conflict.
In December, Ukrainian officials said up to 13,000 of its soldiers had been killed in the fighting.
The comments were a response to the European Commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen, who had estimated that Ukraine had taken 100,000 casualties. Ukraine has been reluctant to reveal its military casualty figures, believing the information would be useful to Russia.
