Yorkshire Ripper’s ‘dirty toilet habit almost got him stabbed in eye’
The Yorkshire Ripper caused disgust by refusing to wash his hands after using the toilet, it has been claimed.
Serial killer Peter Sutcliffe’s habit is said to have annoyed other patients at Broadmoor Hospital so much that one of them tried to stab him in the eye.
Reformed criminal Ben Hatchett saw his behaviour when he served alongside him at the high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: “I worked in the cafe at Broadmoor. Every Thursday the Ripper would be one of the ones who would come in for lunch. I had to make his food.
“And he would use the toilet and wouldn’t wash his hands. He would do it when he was in the communal area.
“He just wouldn’t wash his hands. People didn’t like it. He would come out of the toilet and smirk.
“He did it to wind people up.”
Sutcliffe’s habit upset people so much he was attacked over it.
Ben added: “Him not washing his hands was the reason someone tried to stab him.
“They tried to stab him in his good eye.”
In 2016, reports claimed he was given an assistant to help keep his cell toilet clean after moaning that he was struggling to cope.
The fellow inmate was rumoured to be paid £18 a week to help him with a range of day-to-day tasks.
