Two police officers have been injured following the discovery of a "suspicious package" outside a Primark store – with one reportedly being "stabbed in the neck".

Emergency services were called to the New Square Shopping Centre in West Bromwich at around 10am on Wednesday, July 21, BirminghamLive reports.

One eyewitness said: "It was terrible, saw one copper with what looked like a bad injury to his neck. I'm glad there were arrests.

"I felt sorry for the little children who were scared, it was awful for them to see."

Another person tweeted: "Reports of a copper being stabbed in west bromwich, #sandwell after suspicious package by Primark!"

It has not yet been confirmed whether a police officer has been stabbed during the incident.

A statement from the centre read: "A serious incident has taken place this morning at the shopping centre which resulted In two police officers being injured.

"The men involved were arrested at the scene and the police officers are currently receiving medical treatment.

"We are now assisting West Midlands Police in their investigation and we will give further updates once we’re able."

Dramatic pictures show a huge police presence at the scene, and an air ambulance preparing to land.

One eyewitness said: "My mum and sister were by the incident and managed to get into Card Factory who locked the doors."

Another added: "Very scary in Primark. Everyone ran to the back of the shop and someone shouted there was a bomb.

"No one knew what was happening and we got locked in for a few minutes.

"I hope the police officers make a full recovery."
