A landlord is selling his country pub after just a year due to being hit with a barrage of one-star reviews complaining he's 'too grumpy’.

Andy Gascoigne, 59, was branded ‘miserable’ online by villagers who also accused him of booting the darts team out of the boozer.

He insists he had warned the darts team he was closing for renovations but they quit his pub.

Unhappy customers also complained about Andy's ‘unfriendly rudeness’ on TripAdvisor while another punter described him as a ‘miserable bloke’.

And they were furious when the ex-squaddie and former pro rugby league player brewed a beer called ‘Jog on’ in response to them.

But Andy said: "They don’t like me because I’m a lad from Wakefield who’s made a bit of money and I speak my mind."

Sharing a photo of his new beer on the pub's Facebook page, he wrote: 'Why not join us in wishing all the moaners, groaners or folk who just don't fall into line with the way things are at this moment in time, or is it just our sense of humour!!"

Andy and his wife Mandy bought the 19th century Farmers Arms in Muker, North Yorks., in September 2020.

They quickly earned five-star reviews on TripAdvisor for her cooking. But one-star reviews abounded, with one telling of “unfriendly rudeness”.

The couple said they struggled to recruit staff in Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales and relied on volunteers to keep the pub open. They put the pub on the market before Christmas for offers in the region of £575,000.

It comes with an outside terrace and fully-refurbished owners flat, comprised of a double ensuite bedroom, sitting room, small dining room/office/second bedroom with a bathroom, as well as a self-catering holiday flat and stone-built barn opposite the property.

Wakefield-born Andy played for clubs including Bramley, Hull, Keighley, Leeds, Doncaster and York in a career spanning more than 15 years during the 1980s and 90s.

The boozer was the latest in a line of business ventures he has taken on, having already run an oyster bar and microbrewery on a Scottish island and set up the Haworth Steam Brewery. The self-taught brewer bought an old greengrocers in Haworth after returning to Yorkshire, and later branched out into gin distilling.
