A WOMAN died in a house fire after an inferno erupted – leaving a 15-year-old girl fighting for life.

The 42-year-old, who remains unnamed, died in the horror blaze in Oldham near Manchester on Saturday.

An investigation has now begun, after a 42-year-old woman sadly died at the scene, despite the best efforts of first responders.

A 15-year-old girl was also taken to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Those living nearby were told they had to leave their homes after firefighters rushed to the scene at 4.10pm.

The cause of the lethal fire is currently unknown but firefighters remained on the scene overnight.

A neighbour told the Manchester Evening News they called 999 after hearing someone shout for help.

They said: "The door was open and we saw smoke all over."

Another neighbour said the smoke "spread along the houses, we were just trying to get people out".

They added that the smoke first billowed out when a neighbour tried knocking down the door of the blazing house.

Tragedy as girl, 15, dies after being pulled from the sea at popular beach

Jean-Pierre Helliwell of GMFRS said: "The thoughts and deepest condolences of everyone at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are with the family, friends and loved ones.

"Our crews remain at the scene at this time and are working extremely hard to extinguish the fire."

Detectives are appealing for any information and are especially keen to hear from anyone in the area who has any CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage around the time of the incident.

A GMFRS spokesman added that firefighters made "good progress in extinguishing the fire and are currently carrying out dampening down operations."

They revealed the fire had spread between four homes.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Naismith, of GMP’s Major Incident Team said: “An investigation has been launched to try and establish the circumstances that very tragically led to this woman’s death and to the serious injury of a teenage girl.

“Everyone at GMP sends their condolences to the loved ones of the woman who sadly died. The family of the victim are now being supported by specialist officers and have been kept updated throughout. They are also assisting us with our enquiries.

“You may notice an increase of police visibility in the area in the coming days, if you have any concerns, please speak to one of our uniformed officers who will be patrolling the nearby areas.

“We are still working with partner agencies to get those residents who have been displaced back into their homes as safely and soon as possible. A number of those residents have been provided with alternative accommodation by Oldham Council.”
