Desperate Putin gives army huge pay rise as fears mount following rebellion

Russia is increasing pay for miitary personnel by 10.5 percent in a bid to head of future rebellions after the weekend’s revolt spearheaded by Wgner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin.

A decree published on the Russian government’s website confirmed the change would be in effect from October 1.

The payrises will also apply to a number of other security officials, state news agency RIA reported.

Prigozhin took control of the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don on Friday evening before leading his mercenaries to within 130 miles of Moscow in what he claimed was a demonstration against the incompetence of the country’s military leaders – although he did not mention Putin himself.

Putin may also be motivated by suggestions that Prigozhin had tacit support from within the Russian military.

Analyst Mikhail Komin, writing in a commentary for Carnegie Endowment; said: “The Wagner mercenary boss was counting on solidarity from senior army officers, and since he came close to reaching Moscow without encountering any particular resistance, he might not have been completely mistaken,” analyst Mikhail Komin wrote in a commentary for Carnegie Endowment.

“It’s entirely possible that by the start of his ‘march for justice,’ Prigozhin believed he would find solidarity among many officers in the armed forces, and that if his uprising was successful, they would be joined by certain groups within the ruling elite.”

Grenade launchers, anti-tank landmines, other weapons, military vehicles were among the materiel seized by the police after last week’s mutiny, TASS has claimed, citing a police report published yesterday.

The report claimed: “The police, in cooperation with the Defence Ministry servicemen, teamed into investigative groups, was dispatched to all places where left weapons and ammunition was discovered.

“As a result, the police discovered and seized rounds, RPK machineguns, grenade launchers, AK rifles, TNT charges, grenades, anti-tank landmines, an abandoned BTR, a UAZ Patriot SUV, machinegun belts.”
