Andy Burnham visited The Mets art venue in Bury where he revealed details of the new Greater Manchester Music Commission which seeks to develop and promote the local music industry. But Mr Burnham’s visit made waves for an unintended reason after a video emerged of him singing on stage with a musician as he attempted to sing along to Oasis’ Wonderwall. The Manchester mayor struggled with the lyrics as the video was made even more painful when he failed a fist bump with people ridiculing the Labour politician online.

Mr Burnham did not win any fans over online who mocked his rendition.

One wrote: “Made my eyes and ears bleed…”

Another added: “He passed up a great opportunity for alternative Red Wall lyrics.”

A commenter wanted to know why Mr Burnham took part and said: “He doesn’t know the words and he’s out of tune. What point was he trying to make?”

One critic tweeted: “Not another Bandwagon he is jumping on.”

But it was not all doom and gloom for Mr Burnham as he gained the support of one listener.

They wrote: “If anyone was in any doubt that Andy Burnham isn’t a people’s person then watch this! I’m so proud.”

The music commission will seek to support local music ventures such as United We Stream.

United We Stream was set up as a streaming platform to let local music talent broadcast to audiences at home who could not go to music venues.

Andy Burnham discusses Labour’s future on Question Time

Mr Burnham told ITV News: “Greater Manchester is a global capital of music, but we must always be wary of trading on past glories and resting on our musical laurels.

“One of the strengths of this city-region is its willingness to bring on the new and that is what I hope this new Greater Manchester Music Commission will help us to do.

“Right now, our 10 boroughs are home to a vibrant music scene, and we recognise the need to do everything we can to nurture it.”

According to Manchester Evening News, over 1,000 Afghan refugees have been accommodated in Greater Manchester hotels as Mr Burnham calls for a “fairer” system.

The mayor said local authorities needed to have a coordinated approach for Afghan refugees and said funding should be equally distributed depending on how many refugees are taken in.

He said: “Greater Manchester doesn’t look away – we will always play our part. In fact, we are already playing our part in stepping up to dealing with that crisis.

“But Greater Manchester has always played more than its part when we look at areas across the country when it comes to matters of asylum.

“We don’t believe the current approach is sustainable.”

The UK is set to accept 20,000 Afghan refugees over the next few years with around 5,000 being accepted in the first year alone.
