MEPs in Strasbourg are voting to elect the next President of the European Parliament and there are four candidates, the winner is very likely to be Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola, from the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP). Ms Metsola is part of a more UK-friendly political body within the EU and this move will likely bring positive change for the UK. Politico reports that the three biggest groups in the Parliament reached a backroom deal on the eve of the vote, after the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and Renew Europe secured more senior roles in return for supporting Ms Metsola. She will be the third woman to head the Parliament and the first Maltese to serve as one of the EU Parliament’s presidents.
