German TV has struck back with a humiliating news introduction displaying Liz Truss and a head of lettuce used to mockingly test how long the now-outgoing Prime Minister would serve. Ms Truss presided over a chaotic economic fallout and a Tory rebellion, with led to speculations as to whether she would outlive a lettuce. A German TV channel gave its verdict on the state of British politics in its evening news programme.
Tagesthemen channel’s TV anchor Caren Miosga said: “Because it was only a matter of time until the British Prime Minister resigned, the Daily Star asked people for their bets a week ago.
“Who would last longer? Liz Truss or this lettuce?
“And here is the result from today: the lettuce won and celebrates it with disco balls and gin.”
Dealing another blow to Liz Truss, the German TV presenter said: “Liz Truss is the shortest-governing Prime Minister in the history of the UK for over 200 years.
“The damage is big and the kingdom is headless.”
As Liz Truss was forced out of power, her portrait was faced down while the lettuce celebrated its victory grinning from ear to ear and dressed in a blond wig with British flags in the background.
“A plastic gold crown was placed on the now browning leafy vegetable to mark the occasion.
Only seven days before Ms Truss’ resignation, the Daily Star set up a webcam on the lettuce, forecasting the vegetable would live through her premiership.
The lettuce won the bet and survived Liz Truss’ time in office, adding to Ms Truss’ humiliating resignation. While Truss made her resignation speech, the livestream on YouTube reportedly attracted more than 20,000 viewers.
The Daily Star Twitter account reacted to the resignation by saying: “Tragic Truss lost the race to see if she could outlast our 60p iceberg as she finally gave up on her attempt to cling to power after days of chaos at Westminster.
“She becomes the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history after just 44 days in office – unbeleafable!

Liz Truss’ resignation has opened the way for a new Tory leadership contest only six weeks after she won it by a thin majority of 57 percent against Rishi Sunak.
The former Chancellor and Penny Mordaunt, who also lost this summer’s election, could both throw their hat in the ring in potential bids to replace Liz Truss.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is flying back from his Caribbean holidays, is expected to make a political comeback and has reportedly offered his former Chancellor to join forces.
However, it remains unclear whether Mr Johnson would last very long in the Prime Minister’s role – if elected – as the privileges committee’s investigation could suspend him over partygate in November.
Mr Johnson’s potential Tory leadership bid could amount to political suicide, as Mr Johnson could face a new election in his Uxbridge constituency and lose his seat in Parliament.
