Hancock bringing voting rights event to Denver later this month
Mayor Michael Hancock aims to make Denver the epicenter of efforts to protect voting rights across the country when the city hosts the National Nonpartisan Conversation on Voting Rights later this month.
The event, being held on Oct. 21, 22 and 23 at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, is being organized with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot in response to what Hancock referred to Wednesday as the most aggressive wave of voter suppression efforts in America in decades.
Mayors, lawmakers, elections officials and grassroots organizers “from both sides of the aisle and everywhere in between” are invited to attend, Lightfoot said in an online news conference held Wednesday afternoon.
The goal of the event is to develop an action plan to fight gerrymandering and voter suppression efforts and encourage more participation in elections, the two Democratic mayors said.
Speakers and panel lineups have yet to be announced. Retired Los Angeles Lakers superstar Magic Johnson will be part of the event.
