The leader of the Scottish Conservatives Douglas Ross told Sky News earlier that Thursday’s Holyrood elections will be incredibly close and an SNP majority will threaten the break up of the United Kingdom. Mr Ross urged voters to stop the SNP’s Scottish independence plans by voting for the Scottish Conservatives who he claimed were the “strongest challengers” to stop an SNP majority.

Mr Ross said: “This election is on a knife-edge and if the SNP get a majority we know our next Scottish Parliament is going to be dominated by more division and debate on independence rather than recovery and rebuilding.

“All the opinion polls are showing, the last ten are showing, that the Scottish Conservatives are the strongest challengers to stop that SNP majority and to stop a second independence referendum.”

He explained that “more and more people” at this election are “lending their vote maybe for the first time ever” to the Scottish Conservatives.

The leader of the Scottish Tories added: “So we can have a parliament that really focuses on the issues that matters to the people across Scotland.”

The MP for Highlands and Islands went on to say: “What these opinion polls are also saying is they don’t want an independence referendum on Nicola Sturgeon’s time as First Minister.”

Mr Ross was then asked by Sky News host Adam Boulton if the SNP get a majority at Thursday’s elections would that give them a “mandate” for a second independence referendum.

But the Scot furiously replied: “It would be absolutely wrong as we seek to recover from this pandemic that to start having debates and discussions on another independence referendum within the next couple of years.

“Even Nicola Sturgeon’s own deputy wishes the pandemic was over so he could start campaigning on independence!”

He added: “But I wish this pandemic was over so I can hug my family again!”

A poll by BMG Research in the Scottish newspaper The Herald polled the SNP to win 68 seats in Thursday’s election.

While a Survation poll in The Courier polled the SNP as winning 66 seats, three more seats than in 2016.

However, another poll in the Scotsman by Savanta Comres found the SNP 59 seats, which would see the SNP short of a majority by six.

Scotland’s First Minister has raised the stakes ahead of the Holyrood election this week.

Ms Sturgeon has promised that if the Scottish National Party win a majority, she will take that as a mandate from Scotland’s electorate to hold another referendum on breaking away from the rest of the UK.

Westminster has so far refused to grant Ms Sturgeon the legal powers to hold Indyref2, as Scotland already voted to stay in the Union back in 2014.

Elections across the United Kingdom take place tomorrow and include mayoral elections, local, regional and national elections in the home nations.
