Sturgeon’s political hero Winnie Ewing dies on same day her son due to be ousted

The woman who inspired Nicola Sturgeon to join the SNP and fight for Scottish independence has died at the age of 92.

Winnie Ewing was the first SNP MP to win a breakthrough historic by-election result for the party and would later chair the first meeting of the Scottish Parliament after devolution.

But her death comes on the day her son Fergus, another SNP stalwart, is set to be thrown out of the party for voting in favour of a vote of no confidence in the SNP’s green political partners in Holyrood.
