Breaking his silence after days of pressure to come clean on whether he backs Mr Johnson amid a raft of COVID-19 rule busting party claims and allegations he lied to Parliament, the Chancellor was probed on where he stands with the issue.

Mr Sunak told Sky News that he “fully supports” Mr Johnson’s demands for “patience” in waiting for the Sue Gray investigation into the parties to conclude.

He added that the public should also await the outcomes of the investigation before Mr Johnson should consider his position as Prime Minister and resign.

But asked if he supported the Prime Minister “unequivocally”, Mr Sunak got up and walked straight off.

It comes as Mr Sunak has managed to avoid much of the ‘partygate’ saga as the Prime Minister admitted to being in attendence at the May 20, 2020 bash.

JUST IN Have your say: Are you on Dominic Cummings’ side or Boris Johnson’s as No 10 row explodes?

Last week the Chancellor was pictured hundreds of miles away from Westminster on a visit to Devon.

Asked why Mr Sunak had been so quiet about the ongoing saga, Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries blamed “bad WiFi” in the West Country county.

The comments sparked mockery from observers.

Mr Sunak’s refusal to answer questions on his support of the Prime Minister comes as fresh allegations from Mr Johnson’s former aide Dominic Cummings have rocked No10.

Writing on his blog, Mr Cummings claimed Mr Johnson lied to Parliament adding that he warned the Prime Minister not to go ahead with the parties.

Mr Cummings said he and another advisor personally told Mr Johnson to “get a grip” of the “madhouse” Downing Street, follow the rules like the rest of the country and not go ahead with the parties.

He claimed: “Amid discussion over the future of the cabinet secretary and PPS himself, which had been going on for days…

“I said to the PM something like: ‘Martin’s invited the building to a drinks party, this is what I’m talking about, you’ve got to grip this madhouse’. The PM waved it aside.”
