‘Alien figure’ found by AI in newly discovered Nazca shapes in Peruvian desert

An eerie alien figure has been discovered by AI in the Peruvian desert alongside a series of mysterious shapes known as Nazca Lines.

It comes after one study previously detected the lines in the Nazca Desert, southern Peru, which measured up to 370m long.

The figures, collectively known as geoglyphs, have continuously sparked widespread curiosity and were designed between 500BC and 500AD.

People created them by making shallow incisions in the desert floor, taking away pebbles and leaving coloured dirt exposed.

According to a new study, the deep learning AI model surveyed the figurative geoglyphs which led to the detection of four more, reports the Express.

The strange shapes consisted of an odd-looking humanoid, a set of legs, a fish, and a bird, of which the humanoid was revealed in 2019.

Before the technology, aerial images that covered an extensive area would have to be examined by the naked eye.

The method required "a substantial amount of time, posing a challenge in efficiency and scalability."

The paper, authored by Yamagata University Institute of Nasca and IBM Japan, revealed the technology made way for accelerated identification of the geoglyph candidates.

Researchers revealed the technology's advancement was around 21 times quicker than human capabilities.

Yamagata University said: "Due to the requirement of detecting unconfirmed geoglyph candidates, careful consideration and ingenuity were needed in order to train a deep learning object detection model using training data of very limited quality and quantity."

The researchers have now joined forces with the IBM TJ Watson Research Center to launch an AI-based distribution survey of geoglyphs covering the whole of Nasca Pampa.

They continued: "In addition, we plan to work with the Ministry of Culture of Peru to implement activities aimed at protecting the geoglyphs discovered using AI."

The mystery of the lines has seen anthropologists, archaeologists and ethnologists try to solve it by investigating ancient Nazca culture.

According to one prediction, Nazca people designed them to be seen by deities in the sky.

Another theory, by author Erich von Dänike, proposed that the lines were made on instructions from extra-terrestrial creatures as airfields for their spaceships.

It has been reported that some of the Nazca lines create shapes that are best analysed and seen from the sky at around 500m. However, they can be seen from other high places.

The impressive research has been published in the international academic Journal of Archaeological Science.
