The survey looked at the hypothetical question of if there was such a thing of an EU President, then who would be the preferred option for this role. The survey was carried out by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), with the results published on Tuesday.

But according to the survey, the hypothetical question of who would be best in a role which, at present, does not exist, there was an astounding majority in favour of Angela Merkel.

Some 58 percent of Dutch respondents, 57 percent of Spanish and 52 percent of Portuguese showed that Angela Merkel would be their preference to become the hypothetical EU President.

On the contrary, 6 percent, 9 percent and 11 percent respectively were preferring Emmanuel Macron as their choice in the made-up race for the EU President.

The survey also showed that 31 percent of Bulgarians had a preference of Angela Merkel, with a mere 12 percent backing President Macron.

The future of Germany was also questioned as part of the survey by the ECFR, with results showing that there is a real sense of scepticism for when the departure of Angela Merkel takes place.

The results of the survey showed that only 17 percent of those polled believe that Germany will be able to defend the interests of the European Union through their relations with China.

In addition to this, 52 percent of people believed that the “golden age” of Germany was now a thing of the past, and that the new chancellor who will succeed Angela Merkel will have a big job on their hand to turn things around.

Jana Puglierin, co-author of the study and senior policy fellow at ECFR, said about the task facing the successor of Angela Merkel: “They can no longer afford to remain neutral, or pursue the status quo.

“It is time for Berlin to take sides.”

The poll had been carried out and had participants of between 1,000 and 3,100 voters.

These voters were spread across countries including Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

This new poll comes just weeks before the Bundestag elections take place on the 26th September.

Angela Merkel is set to resign as German Chancellor after this election takes place.

Her departure will bring an end to her 16 years in office as Chancellor of Germany.

But there are some countries who may are not as fond of Ms Merkel as others.

A new poll in Greece has showed that 85 percent of people have a negative opinion of the departing Chancellor.

Radical left opposition politician and later Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of Greece has also described Ms Merkel as “the most dangerous politician in Europe”.

This comes after it was claimed by Mr Tsipras that Ms Merkel wanted to create a “social holocaust” in Greece following the national debt crisis.

However, the results of the ECFR poll shows that despite her critics, Ms Merkel still has enough support across Europe from various countries.
