Armed police are this morning still dealing with a suspected siege situation at woodland near Aberdare in south Wales.

Families living nearby have been told not to leave their houses as the stand-off continued.

They had been first called to the scene on Sunday evening, closing off a road as emergency vehicles arrived.

One local said: ‘Another dozen armed police have just gone past.

‘I can see about six police cars around and about.

‘Nobody is allowed to leave their houses.

‘This is very unusual activity for a postcode like this.

‘There’s an ambulance at the top of the street,’ they added to WalesOnline.

Rhonda Cynon Taf Council asked people to avoid the area and said roads were closed.

Last night police seemed to be focusing their attention on woodland towards the back of a housing estate.

Online traffic sites report Llwydcoed Road is closed in both directions from Cwmynysminton Road (St James Church) to Tan Y Bryn Gardens.

South Wales Police did not explain the nature of the incident it was attending.

A statement last night simply said: ‘We can confirm there is an ongoing police incident in the Llwydcoed area of Aberdare.

‘The public are asked to avoid the area until further notice.’
