King Charles III also then released a statement, saying: "The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of great sadness for me and all members of my family.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

"During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held."

Huge crowd of members of the public are continuing to grow outside Buckingham Palace as they lay flowers by the front gate.

They praise Her Majesty's service by giving three spontaneous cheers and rounds of applause.

Further down at the Mall, a line of black cabs have lined up by the roadside.

ITV journalist Paul Brand tweeted a video of the poignant moment and wrote: "Black cab drivers are lining the Mall to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth.

"One told me in tears that he wanted to pay his respects to the Monarch who's 'all we've ever known'."

The Queen had reigned over the United Kingdom since 1952 and is the country’s longest-serving monarch.

She died at the age of 96 and her death marks the end of the Elizabethan era and is certain to trigger an extended period of national mourning.
