The bodies of three hillwalkers who failed to return from a walk have been found, police have confirmed.

Police Scotland say the three bodies were recovered from a mountainside in the Highlands after concerns were raised over their whereabouts on Saturday evening.

A Coastguard helicopter and mountain rescue team searched the area, finding three bodies in the Scottish Highlands.

Concerns were raised on Saturday at 9pm after the trio, who had made a walk to Aonach Eagach ridge in Glen Coe, did not return.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of concern for a group of three hillwalkers who had not returned from the Aonach Eagach ridge in Glen Coe shortly after 9.05pm on Saturday August 5.

"A search was carried out and the bodies of three people were found. HM Coastguard as well as Glencoe and RAF mountain rescue teams assisted with the recovery operation.

"There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

Police had called out the Coastguard at 9.40pm on Saturday due to the inaccessibility of the area, according to Redditch Advertiser.

The search for the trio proved difficult due to weather conditions, with a coat of mist and fog causing a low visibility radius.

An Inverness search and rescue helicopter was despatched to aid with the search and cut through the thick fogs and mist before a Coastguard helicopter joined in the daytime search.

The trio were found earlier today, with the help of a search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick, which assisted mountain rescuers in recovering the bodies.

The Aonach Eagach ridge is one of the narrowest in mainland Britain and stretches for six miles on the north side of Glen Coe, climbing to a height of 3,608ft.
