Boris Johnson will make another Covid statement today, as Omicron cases continue to surge and a new IHU variant was discovered in France.

This comes off the back of his address to the nation yesterday, Tuesday, January 4.

The Prime Minister is set to face PMQs at 3pm, before giving his Covid statement half an hour later at 3:30pm and then updating MPs at 4pm.

Earlier today it was announced that scientists have identified a new variant in southeastern France that has a large number of mutations.

The B.1.640.2 variant, named IHU, has only infected a dozen people so far and it will not necessarily be more dangerous or infectious than current variants.

However, the large number of mutations means it will be monitored closely by experts.

The first person identified with the new variant was fully vaccinated and had recently returned from a trip to Cameroon.

Tom Peacock, a virologist at imperial College, said B.1.640.2 is "not one worth worrying about too much" at the moment.
