A man who was once dubbed Britain's fattest man after he weighed in at 55 stone has died at the age of 37.

Matthew Crawford made headlines after he was admitted to Kings Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire in 2018.

Whilst there, he reportedly used four hospital beds over the course of 18 months – costing the NHS a good deal of money.

The Sun reports that close friends of Crawford have revealed he died of sepsis and organ failure.

During his controversial stay in the hospital, it was alleged that Crawford had ordered multiple takeaways to his reinforced bed and cost the publicly-funded health service £250,000 in the process.

During his stay, Crawford, who was accused of bed blocking, used a four-bed bay all to himself.

It was reported this reinforced bed cost the taxpayer £7,000 a week.

Also in 2018, Crawford was convicted of assaulting four nurses at a care home near Newark, Notts.

However, he could not attend his court hearing where he was convicted of common assault as there were no ambulances big enough to transport him.
