Burglary suspect flirts with ‘gorgeous’ judge in court – but it doesn’t pay off

In the age of Covid-19, many of us are turning to Zoom calls and online dating to find romance.

But there’s a time and a place for everything. And your bail hearing when you’re on a burglary charge is neither the time nor the place.

Demetrius Lewis appeared in court before Judge Tabitha Blackmon via video link in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Almost as soon as the handcuffed defendant stepped in front of the camera, Lewis’s charm offensive begins: “How ya doin’ how ya doin’?” he asked as the hearing begins.

“Alright, I’m good sir; how are you?” Judge Blackmon answered with an amused expression.

Seeing his chance, Lewis told the judge he is smitten, saying: “Judge, you [are] so gorgeous, so gorgeous judge, I just had to tell you. You’re gorgeous.”

Judge Blackmon graciously thanked him for his attempt at charm before responding: “Flattery will get you everywhere, but maybe not here.”

She went on to tell him that she had found probable cause for charges of burglary and possession of the party drug ecstasy.

Then a state prosecutor broke in to recommend a bail bond of $7,500 (about £5,500), telling the virtual court that three children had been present in the home that Lewis is accused of trying to break into.

“What?” asked the stunned defendant.

Lewis was only released from four-year state prison term in 2019 after a stint for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, the prosecutor added.

The judge then ordered him held on a very reasonable $5,000 (£3,600), which suggests that the burglary suspect’s cheeky interlude might just have saved him a tidy $2,500.

The video clip of Lewis trying his luck with Judge Blackmon has since gone viral on social media, having been viewed more than a million times.

One commenter playfully suggested: “If he’s sincere, he’ll commit another crime just so he can see her again. Anybody want to co-write a bad rom-com? We already got the meet cute.”
