An alleged cannibal accused of strangling his own mother, chopping up her body into 1,000 pieces and eating her remains over two weeks is facing 15 years in jail.

Alberto Sanchez Gomez, 28, is on trial in Madrid after murdering Maria Soledad Gomez, 69, in 2019 and storing her body in tupperware boxes which he kept in the fridge before eating and feeding to a dog, prosecutors say.

Known as the ‘cannibal of Ventas’ after the district where police discovered the blood-stained flat, the waiter was frequently violent towards his mother who reported him to the authorities 12 times, the Spanish court heard this week.

Soledad took out a restraining order against him before her death but friends said whenever he would call, she would always take him in, telling them: ‘What can I do, he is my son.’

According to the indictment, the incident occurred in early 2019 when the suspect, whose cabinet maker father died when he was 15, had a row with his mother at their flat near Madrid’s famous bullring.

During the confrontation, he strangled his mother then dragged her into her bedroom where he used a saw and two kitchen knives to cut her up ‘in order to get rid of the body’, it said.

‘Once he had started cutting up the body, he began eating the remains over the course of about 15 days, storing other parts in various plastic containers around the house and in the fridge,’ the court heard.

He also put some of the remains into plastic bags and threw them into the bin.

Local news outlet ABC said authorities arrived at the house after family friends reported that they hadn’t seen Soledad for several days.

Police asked at the door if his mother was inside, he said she was, and let them in.

Testifying in court on Wednesday, a police officer who entered the flat said the suspect told them he had eaten some of the remains raw, while others parts he had cooked or given to the dog.

Police said they found limbs wrapped in plastic and lying around various rooms, while some body parts were in the fridge and others were cooked in the oven or sitting in a pan.

Several officers were reportedly sick due to the stench and shock of what they were seeing.

The suspect (pictured during his arrest in 2019) had been admitted to psychiatric care three times at the behest of his mother

‘We found a hellish scene,’ an unidentified police officer told Telecinco news channel, with police saying the suspect was known for having drug issues.

The suspect was arrested and has since admitted that he strangled his mother, cut her up and then spent 15 days eating her remains whilst feeding the bits he did not want to his dog.

ABC claims that the suspect had been admitted to psychiatric care three times at the behest of his mother who was terrified of him as he would routinely physically attack her.

After being arrested in 2018, Gomez was served a restraining order but he violated the court order and returned to his mother’s home.

Prosecutors want him jailed for 15 years for murder and desecration of a corpse and are seeking 90,000 Euros in compensation to his older brother.
