Charles urged to find ‘special way’ to honour Princess Anne and Sophie Wessex

King Charles III has been urged to find a “special way” to honour Princess Anne and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, for their “love, constancy and support" of the Queen.

Journalist Alastair Stewart said the Princess Royal and Sophie Wessex highlighted the duo's committment to the late Monarch during her life, and since her passing.

Anne, Princess Royal, is the second child and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip while Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is married to Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, the youngest brother of King Charles III.

Alastair Stewart believes both women should be hailed. He tweeted just hours after Princess Anne issued a statement where she thanked well-wishers around the world for their support.

“I hope the King finds some very special way of further honouring the Princess Royal and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, for their love, constancy and support at this difficult time," he said.

The Princess Royal was in Scotland when the Queen was taken ill, and stayed at her bedside at Balmoral Castle, as senior royals rushed to say their final farewells.

She has taken on the duty of accompanying her mother's body back to London, with the Queen leaving Scotland for the last time bound for RAF Northolt on Tuesday.

Princess Anne said: “I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest Mother’s life. It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys.

"Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting.

“We will all share unique memories. I offer my thanks to each and every one who share our sense of loss.

“We may have been reminded how much of her presence and contribution to our national identity we took for granted. I am also so grateful for the support and understanding offered to my dear brother Charles as he accepts the added responsibilities of The Monarch.

“To my mother, The Queen, thank you."
