Diana spoke to doctor at scene of the crash before princess tragically died

The fire chief who heard Princess Diana's last words has recalled her last words in the hours before her death.

Sergeant Xavier Gourmelon arrived at the scene of a road accident with two vehicles from the Marlar fire and ambulance station.

He already knew it was serious because a full medical team has been dispatched to the scene.

The Daily Mail reports how Gourmelon saw Trevor Rees-Jones when he arrived at the Paris crash at around 12.20pm on August 31, 1997.

Gormellon recalled he was agitated when he arrived at the scene.

The sergeant also spotted another figure crouched in the wreck with another victim.

A fire chief's team removed Diana's partner Dodi Fayed from the car to try to resuscitate him but did not at this stage know who they were.

"She spoke in English and said, 'Oh my God, what’s happened?'

"I could understand that, so I tried to calm her. I held her hand. Then others took over.

"This all happens within two or three minutes."

Physically, he said he could see little wrong with Diana other than an injury to her shoulder.

Earlier a speeding Mercedes driven by Ritz deputy security manager Henri Paul had lost control and smashed into the 13th pillar of the Pont D'alma tunnel’s central reservation, at an estimated speed of 65mph.

It spun around and faced the opposite direction.

The impact killed her partner Dodi Fayed and Henri Paul, the French man who was driving the black Mercedes.

Princess Diana and Trevor Rees-Jones were critically injured in the smash.

French off-duty doctor Frederic Mailliez’s Peugeot entered the tunnel and saw a black Mercedes which had been in an accident and was billowing smoke from its engine.

He stopped his car and hurried across the carriageway.

Two victims were dead and two others were severely injured but still alive

He did an assessment of the victims and returned to his car to get some more medical equipment

The doctor said Diana was sitting on the floor in the back but didn’t have injuries to her face.

He said she was not bleeding but was almost unconscious and had difficulty breathing.

The goal for him, he said, was to get her breathing again but he had little equipment which made the situation more difficult.

Dr Mailliez said he called the emergency services on his mobile phone.

He returned to the car but had no idea the injured woman he is trying to help was Diana, Princess of Wales.

At 4am Diana’s medical team decided to stop resuscitation efforts, which he said had been without any likelihood of success.

They had exhausted their adrenaline supply and had done all they could but her injuries defeated them.

The most famous and the most photographed woman in the world was officially declared dead.
