Doh! Groundskeeper Willie reveals his true Caledonian roots – ending years of claims over his hometown

• The Simpson’s character makes the revelation in the latest show when Bart and co. visit Scotland
• Inverness-born superstar Karen Gillan plays Willie’s love interest in ‘Ae bonny romance’ 

He is the bad-tempered cartoon Scotsman who has been claimed by many towns and cities across the country.

But now it has emerged that The Simpsons character Groundskeeper Willie originates from Edinburgh.

In the latest episode of the hit US animated comedy, the family head to Scotland in search of the Scots school caretaker who returned to his homeland to be reunited with his long-lost love Maisie, played by Karen Gillan.

Previously Glasgow, Aberdeen and Orkney laid claim to being the home of the prickly character.

But when the Simpsons find him, he reveals he lived in capital before moving to Springfield.

The show goes on to light-heartedly poke fun at Scotland and some of the dialect

In one scene where Inverness-born Gillan is asking Willie for a kiss, she says: ‘Give us a smooch ya big ugly bawbag.’

In response, the red-haired janitor says: ‘Aw haud yer wheesht before I boke.’

Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa arrived at Edinburgh Airport in a plane emblazoned with the logo ‘Planespotting Airlines’ which featured a cartoon version of Trainspotting hardman Begbie.

The episode also saw Lisa take aim at the pretentiousness of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as she went on a tour of the city.

She said: ‘The Fringe Festival, a celebration of theatrical irony and self-awareness.

‘It’s so clever without being good.’

During her travels around Edinburgh Lisa also walked by The Proclaimers Dentists surgery which had a sign which read ‘I Would Fix 500 Smiles’.

The episode ended with Homer and Marge committing sacrilege by romping on the Old Course in St Andrews.

The episode, called Ae Bonny Romance, aired in the US on Sunday.

It also featured Scots Dr Who actor David Tennant playing a whisky distillery owner and a song by Glasgow band Belle and Sebastian.

Hollywood star Gillan had told of her delight at landing the part of Maisie and said it was ‘the role I was born to play’.

Bawbag was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2019.

The word received widespread news coverage when a weather storm that struck Scotland in 2011 was nicknamed ‘Hurricane Bawbag’.
