Doomsday cult husband couldn’t be kid killer as ‘he wouldn’t dig shallow graves’

The husband of an alleged cult member has denied killing her children because "he wouldn't dig shallow graves", his family have claimed.

Chad Daybell, 52, and Lori Vallow, 47, from Idaho in the US, face murder charges over the deaths of Tylee Ashlyn Ryan, 16, and Joshua J Vallow, seven, who disappeared in September 2019.

Daybell pleaded not guilty to the murder and conspiracy charges in June this year, CNN reports.

And now, Daybell's five adult children have spoken out about their dad's arrest for the first time.

Garth Daybell, Emma Murray, Seth Daybell, Leah Murphy, and Mark Daybell claim that Daybell wouldn't have buried the bodies in "shallow graves".

Seth told CBS: "This is … a man who buries pets at, like, as deep as he can.

"He knew how to dig graves and that just doesn't sound believable to me."

Tylee was burned and dismembered before being buried just days before her 17th birthday, it is claimed.

JJ’s body was wrapped in duct tape and plastic and buried on September 22, according to investigators.

The couple allegedly put the bodes in a makeshift pet cemetery in Daybell’s garden.

But Daybell's daughter Emma claims her dad "wouldn't be foolish enough" to bury the bodies in his own back garden.

She said: "I don't know why they would be there.

"But I do know that if he were to commit a crime, he wouldn't be foolish enough to put the evidence in his own backyard."

Prior to the childrens' deaths, Daybell and Vallow were part of an online chat room called "Another Voice of Warning”, made up of Mormons.

Vallow and Daybell would regularly post in the group, where they allegedly confessed to the murders.

The mum, whose children were from a previous marriage, believed she was an “exalted goddess” and needed to marry her new husband to fulfil a religious prophecy before the apocalypse.

Vallow believed her purpose on Earth was to create a new holy city, according to court papers obtained by The Sun.

She claimed to be the grandmother of Mormon founder Joseph Smith Jr in a past life.

She and Daybell initially met after attending an event put on by Preparing A People, a cult focusing on the second coming of Christ and the end days.

The couple believed they were part of God’s “chosen 144,000”, who would the world into the New Millennium on July 22, 2020.

Daybell and Vallow were indicted by a grand jury on first-degree murder charges on the deaths of JJ and Tylee.

The 52-year-old is due to stand trial at the end of 2021.
