Elderly dog abandoned at airport after owner refused to pay his travel fee

An elderly dog riddled with infections was abandoned at an airport after its owner refused to pay a fee for him to travel.

The dog named Bama was meant to get on a plane to Miami but was dumped after its owner realised she needed to provide his vaccine information.

Police said the cute Shih Tzu was quickly discarded by its cruel owner on Monday morning at Tampa International Airport, reports Fox 13.

"She left the counter and said she’d make other arrangements," Tampa Airport Police Chief Charlie Vazquez said.

"She came back but before she came back, she kind of dropped the leash and walked off, left the dog on his own in the airport."

It was reported that the dog is now being taken care of after airport police contacted Corrin Smith at VIP Rescue.

Smith believes that Bama was neglected leading up to the final dumping.

"It's disgusting. It's absolutely disgusting and unacceptable," said Smith.

"He was in a really bad shape. He's matted, he's got ear infections, he's got his teeth are infected, he's got a tumour on his back."

But Smith hopes she can help get the poor dog back into shape by getting him medical care and some well-needed grooming.

"And we'll take care of all of that, and I think he'll probably live with me for the rest of his life," she added.

It has been reported that Tampa airport police are currently working with the state attorney's office to try and bring charges against the woman.

"You’ve got to have your records for rabies and things like that," Chief Vazquez commented.

"Have those records when you come to the airport. Have them in hand. Check with your airlines; they’ll let you know what the procedures are so that when you get here, you’re not surprised."
