Family spilt ways and sneak out of pub ‘for cigarettes’ without paying £215 bill

A family was caught on camera dining and dashing at a pub by the waterfront in Cornwall.

Owners of The Fisherman's Arms in Newlyn, Cornwall, posted a CCTV footage to expose and shame the three adults who brought two young children to the pub for beers and grub.

They shared it on Twitter and warned: "These people have done a runner owing £215, went for a cigarette and did one!"

In the footage, a bearded man in light blue top makes a gesture to suggest he'll go have a cigarette.

Another man follows behind while holding a young boy in his arms.

They wait for the big truck to pass by and cross the road.

The pub asked in the post if anyone recognise any members in the group, adding: "Just did a runner without paying, two went out the front door and two out the back!

"Looks like they went on the mermaind pleasure boat trip yesterday afternoon! As they say down St Ives, there's a crow in every hedge boy!"

People shared their thoughts and some suggested the pub managers to change their pay system.

"Always insist on the payment method behind the bar, or take a swipe, if it's cash and outside – then cash with order – hope they are found," one wrote.

Another commented: "They bolted with a toddler? Wow."

"Shame on them…nothing worse than a thief" a third added.

The much-loved pub was reopened last year after it burnt down in a fire in 2019.

Clive Greene, head of tenanted operations at the brewery, was happy about the re-opening of the pub.

He told Cornwall Live: "Many of the pub’s traditional interior features have been restored, with plenty of links to Newlyn’s history on display.

"I know how much it means to the local community to be back together again at this very special pub."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police told the Daily Star: "Police are aware of an incident where it is alleged that a group of people left The Fisherman’s Arms in Newlyn without paying their bill, late afternoon on Sunday 18 June.

"Enquiries continue into this matter.

"Anyone with any information that could assist the police is asked to contact 101 quoting case reference 50230172827."
