Framework Cycle is hosting a Denver bike-in movie night — The Know

In partnership with Bikes Together, Framework Cycles is hosting a bike-in movie night on Friday, July 23. The evening includes a community bike ride before the show and the screening of short film, “Fixed Up – A Terrible Idea” followed by the 1998 Canadian film, “2 Seconds.”

At a glance, Framework Cycles is just another one of Denver’s many bike shops. Affordable prices, friendly mechanics and an in-store café are just a few of its perks. But there’s a twist: In partnership with Embark Education, the space provides middle school students the opportunity to learn while doing.

The primary reason Framework Cycles and Pinwheel coffee exist “is to provide an authentic, real-word classroom experience and to help support their education from a financial standpoint as well,” said Jake Covert, shop manager of Framework’s.

The bike shop and café duo act as a classroom for Embark Education in addition to serving coffee and fixing and selling bikes. That means students can take electives and core classes within the shop. The micro-middle school focuses on challenge-based learning, an approach that does not involve desks but instead hands-on tasks.

If the students are working on percentages in math class, they will often incorporate the bike shop’s point of sales and inventory, Covert explained.

Unlike traditional middle schools, Embark Education is a tuition-free, private institution with a total of 30 students, 10 per grade. Recent student projects include reducing environmental impact in bike shops, explaining why almond milk prices increased and designing a website about minimizing your carbon footprint.

Frameworks hopes to spread awareness about its educational efforts this weekend and is accepting donations during the event. All proceeds from the bike-in will go to Bikes Together to help support cycling education.

The screenings will take place in Framework Cycle’s back yard via an overhead projector. Expect to watch these bike-cinephile classics picnic-style, from your own chair or blanket. Snacks and beverages such as popcorn and kombucha will be available, but feel free to bring your own. Beer and wine are also permitted but you must be at least 21 years old and drink responsibly.

Before parking your bike, Frame Works is also hosting a community ride for those interested in stretching their legs prior to the show. The ride will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday. To see the route, go here and meet up at 1060 Osage St.

The event is free to the public but a $10 to $25 donation is suggested. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the first screening starts at 8:30 p.m.
