Girl Guides get badge for walking to fish and chip shop and picking up pizzas

Girl guides are being given badges for walking to the chippy.

They can collect another for eating a pizza. And a third is on offer for going to the pictures.

Individual groups can now print their own awards for fun activities.

One dad shared a snap of his daughter’s patch handed out by the organisation’s group in St Albans, Herts.

The badge is called “Chippy Hike” and features a cartoon of a smiling female chip wearing walking boots and holding a wooden fish shop fork.

The dad tweeted: “Massively proud of my daughter who just received a badge for (checks notes) walking to a nearby chip shop and eating chips.”

Another local added the same group offered a badge for going to the town’s Odyssey cinema.

They messaged: “Oh it gets better. Once you’ve secured the chippy badge you can move on to using a torch, eating pizza in front of a film and, my personal favourite, going to The Odyssey.

“These are hardened guides round here.’’

But some attacked the new badges and hankered after rewards for traditional outdoor activities like hiking and swimming.
One joker replied: “Tell me The Odyssey is a boozer!”

But the official Girlguiding Twitter account responded with: “She can count independence, following directions, enjoying the outdoors, money management and –most importantly – eating chips as achievements for that iconic badge.”

Another fan of the system added: “Selecting a location, navigation, roadway safety, order selection, queuing, communicating clearly, and handling money ARE skills, as is the function to complete a multi-step process.

“Absolutely worth teaching and celebrating.’’

Girlguiding St Albans or the national HQ were approached for comment.
