Heartbroken mum of dead cop says officers beat him to death in ‘mob’ training

A grief-stricken mother says her police officer son was beaten to death during training which stimulated a deadly mob attack.

Shirley Huffman has filed a wrongful death claim after her son Houston Tipping, 32, died three days after an on-duty accident on May 26.

The incident took place at the Los Angeles Police Department ( LAPD) Elysian Park Academy which saw Tipping act as a bike instructor in a scenario.

A statement released after his death said the scene involved the cop grappling with another LAPD officer.

Police said “Officer Tipping fell to the floor and suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury" during the tragedy.

But Huffman has now filed a notice of claim against the city on Friday (June 24) alleging wrongful death and civil rights violations.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the mum claims that he was “repeatedly struck in the head severely enough that he bled."

She added that he endured multiple breaks in his neck which sparked the harrowing death.

The claim states that this isn't the first time where officers have been injured during the exercise, with concerns being raised about it before Tipping died.

Spokesman Capt. Kelly Muniz said the department is internally investigating to see if “there are any changes that need to be made."

The five-year department veteran was laid to rest on Wednesday ( June 22) in a funeral which was attended by officials including LAPD Chief Michel Moore.

Moore presented his parents with a folded American flag and his comments at the funeral were referenced by Huffman in her claim.

It read: "Chief Moore stated that Officer Tipping impressed his peers with a 'willingness to go the extra mile to make the world a better place.'

“Yet, that wasn’t enough to avoid other officers paralyzing him and eventually killing him in violation of law, and his civil rights.”

The officers involved have not been named at this time.
