What – or who – could lead a child of just 12-years-old to murder their own family?

In the horrifying case of Jasmine Richardson, it was a man who claimed to be a 300-year-old vampire-werewolf.

But heinous Jeremy Steinke wasn't a centuries old bloodsucking canid at all – he was a 23-year-old man who entered into a relationship with a girl, sending her sick messages about killing her loved ones before carrying out their violent plan.

The pair first met in the Canadian city of Calgary in 2005, and kept in touch, sharing messages on social media platforms such as MySpace, and VampireFreaks.com.

Jasmine was just 11 when she met the much older man, who boasted of wearing a vial of blood around his neck, and loving the taste of iron-rich plasma.

The youngster's profiles, under the username 'runawaydevil', stated that she was 15.

On them, she described herself as a "nocturnal wiccan" who liked "dark poetry kinky s**t" and the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

She rounded off her profile with the statement: "Welcome to my tragic end."

Online, Steinke called himself 'souleater' and listed his interests as "pain and razor blades".

The pair exchanged intense, worrying messages, with Jeremy sending one reading: "You are a sight for soar [sic] eyes and I miss you more than killing people! Can we get together and kill people together?"

When Jasmine's parents, Marc, 42, and Debra, 48, found out about their daughter's relationship with Steinke they were horrified and took away her computer to stop her from contacting him.

Undeterred, she would sneak out at night time to see him. Quickly, her innocent, cheery style morphed to match the dark hues and textures Steinke preferred.

From the trailer he shared with his mum, Steinke raged against Jasmine's parents, blogging a twisted premonition of what was to come.

He posted: “My Lover’s rents are totally unfair; they say that they really care; they don’t know what is going on; they just assume. Their throats I want to slit. Finally there shall be silence. Their blood shall be payment!”

A few days later, Jasmine emailed him, saying: “I have a plan. It begins with me killing them and ends with me living with you.”

On April 23, 2006, Steinke watched what he called "the best love story of all time" – the grisly hyper-real and disturbingly graphic serial killer movie Natural Born Killers.

He necked a bottle of red wine along with some beer as he watched the film to rile himself up enough to visit Jasmine's parents' house, where he put her plan in to action.

Pulling on a ski mask and picking up two knives, he drove to her home and broke in through the basement.

The noise woke Debra who went to investigate. She was confronted by the masked intruder, who began stabbing her without saying a word.

Her screams woke her husband, who despite his best efforts to gouge out Steinke's eyes and stab him with a screwdriver, also found himself being violently stabbed.

When Marc asked "why" this was happening, he was told: "It's what your daughter wanted!"

Petrified by the commotion, Tyler lay in his bed with his toy lightsaber across his chest for protection.

He must have been relieved to see his big sister in the doorway – until she attacked him, stabbing him over and over again in the chest. Steinke finished the job, slashing the little boy's throat.

Jasmine and Steinke made a getaway to start their new lives together, stopping off for food, and heading to a party where they were seen kissing passionately.

The Richardsons' bodies were not discovered until 1pm the following day, and when they realised that Jasmine was not one of the victims, feared that she had been kidnapped by the killer.

Searching her school locker, they discovered drawings she had done depicting her and Steinke killing her family, burning them alive. Pals added that she often spoke of wanting to kill her mum and dad.

Police eventually arrested the runaway killers nearly 100 miles away. Steinke proposed to Jasmine via letter as they awaited trial. She accepted but years later called it off.

In 2007 they were both found guilty of three counts of first degree murder. Steinke is serving three life sentences back to back, and will be eligible for parole in 2033.

Due to her young age, Jasmine was sentenced to 10 years followed by four years in a psychiatric institution and four-and-a-half years under conditional supervision in the community.

In 2016, Jasmine was declared mentally sane and released from custody. She has since changed her name and is now now living her life under her new identity.

While 'free', she will never be rid of the anguish of what she and Steinke did.
