Horror high speed bus crash kills 40 people with more than 100 injured

    A bus crash has claimed the lives of 40 people and injured another 115, with two coaches believed to have collided.

    The incident took place between Kaffrine and Tamba in central Senegal, with one of the buses smashing into the side of the other.

    The nation is now understood to have entered into a three-day-long national mourning period.

    Senegalese officials are now understood to be meeting to in the coming days to address road safety in the country.

    On Twitter, it has been claimed that a bus travelling from Tamba collided with a bus travelling from Dakar.

    Law enforcement and fire and rescue teams are understood to have been on the scene of the incident, which took place at 3:15am local time on Sunday (January 8).

    Reports now claim that the buses have now been removed and normal traffic is flowing again.

    Shocking images of the crash show one of the buses seemingly totally destroyed well beyond its front set of wheels.

    The head of operations for Senegal's National Fire Brigade Colonel Cheikh Fall said: "It was a serious accident."

    He added that all of the victims had been taken to hospitals and medical centres in the town of Kaffrine.

    The smash is understood to have taken place on the country's number 1 national road.

    The President of Senegal, Macky Sall, said in a Tweet: "Following today's serious accident in Gniby which caused 40 deaths, I have decided on a 3-day national mourning from January 9th.

    "An interministerial council will be held on the same date to take firm measures on road safety and public passenger transport."
