How much data does Google Maps use? | The Sun

LOTS of us use Google Maps every day without realising how much mobile data it is using.

Can it be used without data? Here's all you need to know…

How much data does Google Maps use?

On average, every ten miles Google Maps uses about 3-5 MB of data per hour of use.

This isn’t a lot if you compare that streaming a single three minute song uses up the same amount, or sometimes even more, data than Google Maps.

According to reports, Google Maps uses less data than Apple Maps, although the latter uses just under 1MB and uses about 2.7MB for a half-hour trip.

Google Maps can be used offline without data.

All you need to do is download the map before you start your trip.

However downloading the map does require internet connection.

The downside to using offline maps is that you won't get live traffic reports and updates or be able to find the quickest route depending on traffic.

How to download a map

  1. Open Google Maps and search for the location you want to save.
  2. Tap the bottom info bar
  3. Tap the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner
  4. Tap Download offline map
  5. Choose the size of the region you want to save (pinch to increase size)
  6. Tap DOWNLOAD
