Idiot burglar fails to break into vulnerable woman’s house twice in two days

A bungling burglar has found out the hard way that breaking into elderly victims' homes probably isn't for him.

Peter Swali has been jailed after twice targeting the same woman's home in the space of just two days.

The 23-year-old tried to smash his way into a 76-year-old’s house in Shard End, Birmingham on February 6 last year but became spooked and made a run for it empty handed.

Not one to accept defeat, Swali returned a day later only to discover he still couldn't find a way inside the woman's home and was this time caught on CCTV fleeing the scene in a Volkswagen Golf.

Police spotted the suspect driving around in the car just hours later, BirminghamLive reports

Swali refused to pull over and was pursued through city streets. Officers used a stinger and managed to bring the vehicle to a halt.

A court heard how Swali then jumped into the back of the car, claiming he was an innocent passenger who had nothing to do with the attempted burglaries. He told officers he had just been picked up by the now 'absent driver'.

Swali, of Yardley Green Road, Bordseley Green, Birmingham was found guilty of aggravated attempted burglary and attempted burglary at Birmingham Crown Court on April 24.

He was sentenced to eight years and three months behind bars.

Detective Sergeant Jay Aston of West Midlands Police, from the burglary neighbourhood crime team, said: “Swali targeted the same victim on two separate occasions. The vulnerability of the victim and the seriousness of the crime was taken into consideration and the sentence reflects this.

“Burglary is a serious crime which deserves lengthy sentences. I’m satisfied that the severity of this crime has the correct punishment. People should be able to feel safe in their own homes.”
