And Dominic Green has warned the 78-year-old he can no longer count on the “loathing” of predecessor Donald Trump to protect him from scrutiny. Mr Green, a historian and author who is also deputy editor of The Spectator’s world edition, said: “Joe Biden’s extended honeymoon with the US media is over.
“Amid the fiasco of the Afghanistan withdrawal, the fact-checkers have turned on him.
“There will be no turning back.”
Writing in the Telegraph, he explained: “Most of the American media were so unhinged by their loathing of Donald Trump, and so excited by the prospect of reviving the Ray-Banned glory days of the Obama administration, that they promoted Biden as the ‘normal’ candidate and protected him from questions about his record and abilities. No longer.
“The talking heads who sold the wars in the early 2000s are back, explaining why withdrawal is strategically mad, and that we’re only a drone strike or two away from victory.
“The nuance – withdrawal is overdue by about nineteen years, but Biden’s handling of it has been chronically inept – is lost.”
Mr Green suggested Mr Biden “has been blatantly past it for some time, and the media devoted considerable energy to covering for him”.
Turning his attention to the 56-year-old former Attorney General of California, he said: “Meanwhile, Biden’s VP Kamala Harris has gone from boasting that she was the last person in the room when Joe signed off on the flight from Afghanistan to being nowhere to be seen.
“Actually, that isn’t fair. Kamala Harris has gone from near-total invisibility on the southern border, where the Biden team sent her to deal with the migrant crisis, to high visibility if you happen to be in Vietnam and Singapore, which is where she now is.”
With Harris “playing it cool”, it was Mr Biden who was taking the heat for Afghanistan, Mr Green suggested, with a certain inevitability about his political demise as a result.

He said: “There’s time yet, but the media’s turn against Biden has started the countdown towards that eventuality that no one apart from the Second Husband, the Blob, and the Veep herself are looking forward to: Kamala Harris’s shot at the presidency.”
Mr Trump last year struck a deal with the Taliban which would have seen US forces quit Afghanistan by May, with this date subsequently pushed back by Mr Biden.
Mr Biden has repeatedly defended his decision to pull out all US forces by August 31, and said he took responsibility for making the decision to end the 20-year war.
However, he has claimed the Taliban’s march into Kabul unfolded more quickly than anticipated, raising questions about a possible intelligence failure.
Nevertheless, he has continued to defend his decision, telling reporters on Sunday: “I think history is going to record this was the logical, rational, and right decision to make.”
Speaking yesterday, Ms Harris, currently on a trip to south east Asia, said: “There is going to be plenty of time to analyse what has happened and what has taken place in the context of the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“But right now we are singularly focused on evacuating American citizens, Afghans who have worked with us and Afghans who are vulnerable, including women and children and that is our singular focus at this time.”
Also speaking yesterday, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said he had not heard the president discuss any plans to fire, reassign or ask for the resignation of any White House or US officials over the situation in Afghanistan.
Mr Biden will come under pressure at a G7 meeting today to seek more time to evacuate thousands of people hoping to flee from Afghanistan as fears grow that time for the massive operation is running out as the deadline approaches.
Widespread chaos punctuated by sporadic violence has gripped Kabul’s airport since the Taliban took over the Afghan capital on August 15, with Western and Afghan forces driving back crowds desperate to flee, and at least 20 people killed.
Evacuations are being conducted on a “war footing”, a NATO official said.
