Kansas Senate GOP leader Gene Suellentrop arrested for ‘driving under influence and fleeing cops’

KANSAS Senate Republican leader Gene Suellentrop has been arrested for "driving under influence and fleeing cops."

Suellentrop, 69, was booked into Shawnee County Jail in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He was booked at 3.55am and currently remains in jail at the time of reporting.

The Republican was charged with DUI, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, speeding, improper crossover on a divided highway and improper driving.

He is currently being held on a bond of $1,000.

A spokesman for Suellentrop and Senate President Ty Masterson confirmed to the Kansas City Star that the Majority Leader had been arrested.

However, they could not provide any comment or details Tuesday morning.

Suellentrop has served since 2009, most recently becoming the majority leader following November's election.

He succeeded the retiring Senator Jim Denning who did not seek reelection.
