Labour accused of flip-flopping over allowing workers to keep new income tax cut

Labour has been accused of flip-flopping over allowing workers to keep the new income tax cut.

Leader Sir Keir Starmer previously said that it was ‘correct’ for the Government to reduce the basic rate from 20p to 19p next year, a measure announced in Kwasi Kwarteng’s recent mini-Budget.

But yesterday, during a series of interviews on Sky News and Times Radio, Labour’s work and pensions spokesman Jonathan Ashworth said his party would reverse all of Mr Kwarteng’s measures.

Last night Tory Party chairman Jake Berry said: ‘While the Conservatives are, on average, saving Brits £500 off their tax bill… 

‘Labour are committed to putting taxes up.’

Cabinet Office minister Brendan Clarke-Smith said Mr Ashworth’s comments were ‘another screeching U-turn from Labour’.
