Humiliated wet lettuce Prime Minister Liz Truss has apologised for going "too far" – but pledged to fight on to outlast the Daily Star's lettuce to lead the Tories into the next election.

Speaking to the BBC's Chris Mason today (Monday) as she desperately tried to revive her ailing premiership, the PM admitted she acted "too fast" with the ill-fated mini-budget.

But she claimed that she was determined to beat the odds to stay in power despite.

She made the comments after new chancellor Jeremy Hunt forced wilting Liz into submission after he scrapped almost all her proposed tax cuts in a series of dramatic U-turns that will raise £32bn a year for the battered economy.

The wannabe PM reversed plans to slash the basic rate of income tax from 20% to 19% in April and axed new VAT-free shopping for foreign tourists.

And he will only fund the Energy Price Cap until April, not for two winters as originally planned, promising that support for soaring bills will be reviewed from Spring in a blow to all taxpayers’ heating bills.

Truss, speaking to Mason, said: "I recognise that we did act too fast, and that's why I've adjusted what we're doing and I do think it is the mark of an honest politician who does say, yes, I've made a mistake.

"I've addressed that mistake. And now we need to deliver for people, you known what we've said we'll deliver.

"I have said sorry for the fact that we did act too far. We went too far and too fast…

"I'm sticking around because I was elected to deliver for this country, and that is what I am determined to do – I will lead the Conservatives into the next general election."

    • Cost of beer, cider and wine to rise after Jeremy Hunt rips up Liz Truss's mini-budget

The destruction of Lettuce Liz’s tax-cutting mini Budget was deemed a fatal blow by many within Westminster, and it even saw Insiders believe that it could have been a matter of days before the PM quits in disgrace.

But the stubborn leader now appears to have put that claim to bed.

Among Jeremy Hunt's plans announced today was the reversal of cuts to the basic rate of income tax.

This will see earners on £30,000 lose a £174 boost, say wealth managers Quilter.

    • Who do you think is running the UK? Liz Truss, Jeremy Hunt, or someone else?

And money expert Martin Lewis warned energy bills could soar 73% from £2,500 to a whopping £4,350 a year if the price cap suddenly ends in April.

Bookies Ladbrokes have now slashed odds that the Daily Star’s manky 60p lettuce will outlast Truss to 4/6, from 4/5 at the weekend.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “The lettuce has taken a healthy lead in the betting as Liz Truss’ imminent exit odds have been slashed once again over the weekend.”
