Authority sources said his body was found in the Grijalva river in Chiapa de Corzo, in an areas known as “El Tapón”, in the Sumidero Canyon.

‌‌The victim was sucked into the groundwater of an open sewer in the El Magueyito neighbourhood, some distance away.

‌The man was “pulled” by the torrents of the storm drain when he was pushing a stranded pick-up truck.

The heavy rains on Saturday in the area left homes flooded and cars stranded.

‌A group of six men on Saturday evening, including Ariel, had helped a Nissan van driver, who was stranded.

When they managed to free the stuck vehicle, the biologist fell into a sewer, where he was sucked in. The five others tried to help him, but he disappeared instantly.
