A 69-year-old man has been arrested after police found he had been driving without a licence for 50 years.

The half century of illegal driving came to an end for the pensioner when police pulled the man over, who had failed a written driving exam six separate times.

While driver Tatsuo Matsumoto had been able to keep up the ruse for some time, it all came crashing down after a literal crash in Higashimurayama, Tokyo.

The 69-year-old had been riding his trusty Harley Davidson three-wheeled motorcycle before crashing into a vehicle in front of him, causing a costly amount of damage to the car in front.

A reported £2,467 (400,000 Yen) worth of damage had been caused by the bump, which Tatsuo sped away from before police could respond to the scene.

Despite fleeing from the scene, officers were able to identify the 69-year-old by playing back dash cam footage captured by the victim of the crash.

But it wasn't until two months later that police were actually able to catch and arrest the Harley Davidson driver after they spotted him in Kiyose, Tokyo.

A high-speed pursuit unfurled, with Matsumoto abandoning his beloved vehicle when it was too big to fit down a narrow path.

Officers eventually cornered and arrested Matsumoto after he hit a dead end, where he initially claimed to have left his licence at home, before admitting he didn't have one at all.

An investigation eventually revealed that Matsumoto had failed his motorcycle driving licence six separate times before he gave up entirely in the 1980s.

The 69-year-old said it was not the first time he had been caught riding a motorcycle without a licence, with his first altercation with the law happening at the age of 17.

The man was also caught in his 50s too, Yahoo News reported.
