Man to spend 24-hrs doing world’s most hated exercise to stop people complaining

A personal trainer has set his sights on breaking the world record for most burpees in a 24-hour period.

Luke McGill, a gym trainer at OneGym, has said one of the reasons he hopes to set a new Guinness World Record is so "no one can complain in my classes" when he asks them to perform a dreaded burpee.

Rigorous training five times a week and a day dedicated solely to burpees have steered Luke, from Bishop Auckland, Durham, to his goal of besting the current World Record.

Currently, New Zealander Blair Williamson holds the record, with an intense 10,815 burpees for personal trainer Luke to beat.

Breaking a world record isn't for everyone, Luke admitted, saying: "I do believe it's something you're born with and can't truly be trained. I have an urge to push myself the harder the task gets."

No harder a task than 24 hours of consistent, solid burpees, which Luke is undertaking early next year and training constantly for until then.

Speaking of his current training regiment, Luke said: "I'm training five times a week, however only one day a week is dedicated to the burpees itself.

"I'm working on a higher frequency of reps to work on my muscular endurance threshold. I'm currently adding more time each week to my burpee set day, in which I'm averaging more per hour and decreasing rest times each session."

The burpees record is as much a physical endurance as it is a mental one, with Luke adding: "I feel like I've massively underachieved in my life, growing up I would let the words of others discourage my goals and therefore never strive to complete them.

"These days I'm a completely different person and I will not allow myself to be mediocre anymore. Not being that person again is my motivation."

Luke seems to have picked the toughest exercise of all, saying: "Chest to ground burpees are, in my opinion, one of the toughest exercises to do when undergoing HIIT workouts, it's a full body attack and will take you to your limit when done continuously.

"It happens to be the one exercise that everyone hates when I teach my gym classes, if I do 24 hours then no one can complain in my classes again."
