UK weather: Met Office forecast further rain showers

A Scandinavian “cold pool” is expected to hit the UK as the end of October draws near, bringing with it temperatures as low as -20C. 

Weather warnings have been issued for rain and flooding – with a large swathe of England warned to expect the adverse weather conditions.

The approaching Storm Ciaran has already been compared with Storm Babet earlier this month, which left hundreds of properties submerged under water.

The northern parts of the UK are to face particularly cold weather, with snow even predicted for some regions after the weekend.

Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, told GB News: “It is looking similar to Storm Babet, and that means there is going to be more rain, especially for Scotland.

“The continued wet weather is the result of the sea temperatures remaining higher than normal after the summer heat.

“This ploughs energy into the atmosphere, and much like a pan of water on the stove, moisture evaporates and turns to rain.

“There is a bit of a wintry element to this, with northern regions including Scotland possibly going to feel colder as we go through next week with the risk of frosts and some wintriness over higher ground.”

90mph winds and persistent rain have been predicted for parts of England and Wales as weather warnings are issued by the Met Office.

The wet and windy weather is set to persist throughout this week, before northern regions are plunged into icy temperatures.

This will possibly cause snow in regions with higher ground in Scotland.

Mr Dale added: “There is a huge blocking high over Scandinavia associated with a pool of cold air which will be bringing temperatures of between -17C and -20C to the region.”

The Met Office has issued weather warnings through the weekend for more than six inches rain across eastern Scotland.

Meanwhile, amber warnings for rain are in place for Northern Ireland on Monday and Tuesday this week, covering Belfast, Newry and Armagh.

The weather agency warns of a danger to life, including the possibility of extensive flooding of homes and businesses.

The warning is in place from 9pm this evening to 9am tomorrow morning.
