Medical student, 25, disguised himself as a woman then threw acid in the face of a junior doctor he studied with, court hears

A medical student disguised himself as a woman before throwing acid in the face of a junior doctor he had studied with, a court heard today.

Milad Rouf, 25, donned a mask and sunglasses before throwing the corrosive substance over Dr Rym Alaoui, who is in her 20s, on the doorstep of her home in Brighton on May 20, a court heard.

While on the run, Rouf discarded items of his costume in bins across the city in Sussex before buying new clothes from Primark, said police.

Officers later examined hours of CCTV footage to follow Rouf’s movements, discovering he had ‘heavily’ disguised himself as a female to carry out the attack.

A search of his home address in Cardiff also found items matching the clothing he bought, as well as a hand-written list of the items included in his disguise. 

Appearing at Lewes Crown Court, the defendant admitted causing a dangerous, noxious thing to be taken, received with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable and do grievous bodily harm.

Dr Alaoui, who trained with Rouf at Cardiff University, was on a day off from work and is understood to have answered a knock on the front door of her shared house.

When she opened the front door she was confronted by Rouf wearing a mask and sunglasses who then sprayed her with the liquid, causing irreversible burns, the court heard.

Neighbours soon called an ambulance and Dr Alaoui was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. 

She suffered life-changing injuries as a result of the attack.  

Witnesses in the quiet cul-de-sac were left shocked by the incident and told how the doctor was rushed into the back of an ambulance.

One said at the time: ‘It all happened before I got home from work but there was a real commotion with police and bystanders and an ambulance.

‘I don’t know the lady who lives there but by all accounts she is quite badly injured.’

Another added: ‘It’s was a horrendous attack and there was a real commotion with police and ambulance. I just hope she’s going to be okay.’

Following the incident, Sussex Police launched a manhunt to find the attacker and released images of a masked suspect they wanted in connection with the incident.  

Investigating officer Rose Horan said: ‘This was a premeditated, malicious and harrowing incident, and I’d like to thank the victim for showing such incredible bravery and dignity throughout. She has been inspirational.

‘I would also like to thank the many officers who responded to the incident and the wider community for their huge support in our investigation. 

‘We approached and engaged with a wide range of businesses in the city centre and they provided us with hundreds of hours of CCTV.

‘In the end, it was this footage that enabled us to trace Rouf’s movements through the city and build a strong case against him, which has resulted in a guilty plea at court.’

Rouf, of Roath, Cardiff, was remanded in custody for sentencing on October 7.
